The Curious Relationship Between Facts and Truth in Mark Haddons Novel - Literature Essay Samples

The title of Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a reference to a famous Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Conan Arthur Doyle. Baker Street’s most famous resident deduces who committed the crime in this particular story by interpreting a clue in a much different way than normal: the mystery gets solved not on account of a what a dog did do but rather on account of what did not do: bark. In light of its relation to Haddon’s novel, it is interesting to note that the character of Sherlock Holmes has moved from being seen merely as a emotionless, robotic calculating machine into, as one very famous recent TV show described him, a high-functioning sociopath. The facts of Sherlock Holmes remains unchanged; it is the interpretation that has changed. If The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time had been written twenty years ago, the interpretation of the narrator’s unnamed â€Å"behavioral condition† might have been interpr eted as retardation or even mild schizophrenia. Today, it is easy to interpret the condition as autism or Asperger’s. The real lesson that The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time seems to aiming for is that facts detached from interpretation do not equal truth. Point of view is everything in the novel. Christopher Boone at one point observes that â€Å"the mind is just a complicated machine.† The book is full of declarative observations of facts or opinions like this, but this assertion is one of the few times that he makes an attempt at interpreting what is a fact to him. What eventually adds up into a great big pile of brutally honest factual statements by Christopher should by all accounts have the effect of making it incredibly easy to understand him. But, as Christopher observes, â€Å"the rule for working out prime numbers is really simple, but no one has ever worked out a simple formula for telling you whether a very big number is a prime number or what the next one will be.† For Christopher, this is merely mathematical fact and any interpretation will be equally applied to math, but the reader can interpret that what is true for prime numbers is also true for people. There is no simple formula for using just the facts of someone’s life to figure out what’s really going on inside their mind. Christopher almost seems to intuitively realize this. At one point he admits â€Å"I didnt understand about other people having minds.† That may seem like the kind of bizarre statement that only someone suffering from a brain disorder like autism could make. (Or like someone suffering from schizophrenia could make if you were interpreting it twenty years ago.) However, he then goes on to say that he worked around this failure by deciding to look at how other people think as â€Å"a kind of puzzle, and if something is a puzzle there is always a way of solving it.† While it may seem bizarre to not understand that other people have minds, isn’t that really how most people treat others most of the time? Just because you realize that other people have minds of their own doesn’t mean you don’t expect that mind to work exactly the same way as yours. So it makes sense that the whole book is driven by Christopher’s desire to solve the mystery of who killed the dog. If you are going to try to solve a crime, you have to expect that you can think like the person who committed the crime. Since Sherlock Holmes is such an important â€Å"character† in the novel, it’s hard to ignore the difference in point of view between the books about him and this book about one of his biggest fans. Christopher writes down a lot of information like facts and opinions. These fact and opinions build up over time to become clues and evidence as we try to figure him out. Every time Sherlock solves a crime and Dr. Watson writes about it, the reader gets more clues and evidence to solve the mystery of Sherlock himself. But if you stop to think about it, everything that is ever known about Sherlock Holmes is only known because Dr. Watson says it’s so. Christopher seems to realize this when he observes it is Dr. Watson who writes that Sherlock’s mind is always trying to connect various disconnected bits of information to form a logical conclusion before going on to add â€Å"that is what I am trying to do by writing this book.† The reader’s initial response to the story told by Christopher Boone is that it must be one-hundred percent truth since, according to Christopher himself, â€Å"I do not tell lies. Mother used to say that this was because I was a good person. But it is not because I am a good person. It is because I cant tell lies.† Throughout the book, Christopher demonstrates not just an inability to tell lies, but a rather strange inability to even determine what a lie actually is. He often misapprehends any kind of statement that is not literally true as a lie, even those lacking any inherent attempt at deception. Over time, these example of how much Christopher hates lies build into a kind of theme that suggests you can never really get at the truth of someone unless you can get at just the facts. And yet all those facts the reader learns about Christopher don’t really help to understand him, either. One example of how Christopher doesn’t seem capable of interpreting the difference between lies comes when he himself is brutally honest: â€Å"I like Sherlock Holmes, but I do not like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.† Christopher dislike of Arthur Conan Doyle has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. He dislikes Doyle because he was so easily fooled into thinking obviously faked photographs of fairies were real and author’s belief that â€Å"you could communicate with the dead.† Christopher’s reasons for disliking the man who created the fictional character who’s had the greatest influence on him is especially interesting. After all, are there not still many people who think believing you can communicate with someone suffering from mental issues like autism or schizophrenia is just as impossible as communicating with the dead? By the time the end of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is reached, most people will have to admit that you really can’t honestly say you know how Christopher’s mind works any better than when you started reading. Christopher begins his story by informing the reader that it’s a murder mystery novel. Only through interpretation of this fact does it prove true. He ends by writing â€Å"I found my mother and I was brave and I wrote a book and that means I can do anything.† That closing assertion is one of the few times that he provides interpretation alongside fact, but the average reader must surely find this interpretation highly dubious, not to mention a supreme example of overconfidence. From the reader’s perspective, nothing that has happened to that point provides any clue that Christopher should feel such confidence. But maybe that’s the point. Christopher starts the novel by telling us it is a murder mystery and ends wit h an affirmation that he is capable of doing anything. Maybe the real murder victim here was that part of Christopher that was holding him back and maybe he is the only one who can know this fact happens to be a truth because he is the only one capable of interpreting the facts of the novel accurately.

While the use and understanding of philosophy goes widely unknown by a majority of the population today, a selective few have recognized its potential and utilized it to its fullest. In the following essay, three prominent philosophers; Bertrand Russell, Ayn Rand, and Christopher Hitchens. Each gives their insight to three important topics; the value of philosophy, using philosophy and its value, and the importance of freedom of speech. All of whom will be discussed, and agreement or disagreement will also be concluded and supported. While definite answers can be gained through the sciences, philosophic study only raises more uncertainty. Bertrand Russell supports his arguments with insight that comes from teaching, practicing, and seeing the effects of philosophy both within himself and the people around him. While studying philosophy Russell will only intensify the uncertainty about the world around us and the inner workings of our mind. Likewise in support of Russell’s argument, the study of sciences that is aforementioned such as; Phycology, Astronomy, and Physics which were originally pondered by philosophers has moved from philosophical theory to scientific study. What Is Semantic Bleaching

In semantics and historical linguistics, semantic bleaching is the loss or reduction of meaning in a word as a result of semantic change. Also known as semantic loss, semantic reduction, desemanticisation,  and weakening. Linguist  Dan Jurafsky notes that semantic bleaching is pervasive with . . . emotional or affective words, even applying to verbs like love ( The Language of Food, 2015). Examples and Observations Related to broadening is bleaching, where the semantic content of a word becomes reduced as the grammatical content increases, for instance in the development of intensifiers such as awfully, terribly, horribly (e.g. awfully late, awfully big, awfully small) or pretty (pretty good, pretty bad . . .). (Philip Durkin, The Oxford Guide to Etymology. Oxford University Press, 2009) The Semantic Bleaching of Emotional Words Words like horrible or terrible used to mean inducing awe or full of wonder. But humans naturally exaggerate, and so over time, people used these words in cases where there wasnt actually terror or true wonder. The result is what we call semantic bleaching: the awe has been bleached out of the meaning of awesome. Semantic bleaching is pervasive with these emotional or affective words, even applying to verbs like   love. Linguist and lexicographer Erin McKean notes that it was only recently, in the late 1800s, that young women began to generalize the word love to talk about their relationship to inanimate objects like food. (Dan Jurafsky, The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu. W.W. Norton, 2015) Origin of the Concept of Semantic Bleaching The process by which the literal meaning of a word or phrase evanesces is called semantic bleaching and was first elucidated in an influential book by the German linguist Georg von der Gabelentz in 1891. Invoking the metaphor of the civil servant [who] is hired, promoted, has his hours cut back, and finally gets pensioned off completely, Gabelentz says that when new words get created from old, fresher new colors cover the bleached old ones. . . . In all of this, there are two possibilities: either the old word is made to vanish without a trace by the new, or it carries on but in a more or less vestigial existence--retires from public life. Oxford University Press, 2010) Bleached Got We regard have got [to] as idiomatic, because the element got is fixed, and because it derives its meaning from the combination as a whole (often shortened as gotta). In this connection note that the meaning of got is bleached (i.e. has lost its original meaning), and does not carry the meaning possess. (Bas Aarts, Oxford Modern English Grammar. Oxford University Press, 2011) Examples of Semantic Bleaching: Thing and Shit Thing used to refer to an assembly or council, but in time came to refer to anything. In modern English slang, the same development has been affecting the word shit, whose basic meaning feces has broadened to become synonymous with thing or stuff in some contexts (Dont touch my shit; Ive got a lot of shit to take care of this weekend). If a words meaning becomes so vague that one is hard-pressed to ascribe any specific meaning to it anymore, it is said to have undergone bleaching. Thing and shit above are both good examples. When a words meaning is broadened so that it loses its status as a full-content lexeme and becomes either a function word or an affix, it is said to undergo grammaticalization. (Benjamin W. Wiley-Blackwell, 2003) Semantic Change, Not Semantic Loss A common concept in grammaticalization theory is described by a number of terms including bleaching, desemanticisation, semantic loss, and weakening . . .. The general claim behind such terms is that in certain semantic changes something is lost. However, in typical cases of grammaticalization, there is often a redistribution or shift, not a loss, of meaning (Hopper and Traugott, 1993:84; emphasis added . . .). To determine whether a semantic change has involved loss, one must measure the differences between positive specifications of the putative before and after meanings, thus making the claim of semantic loss a falsifiable one. Should Student Athletes Be Paid - 1323 Words

A topic that is very controversial for everyone is, should student-athletes in college be compensated? There numerous evidence that supports in favor and many against the proposition of paying student- athletes who play sports for their university. As a college athlete, students are putting their bodies on the line each game they play. There’s possibility of suffering a traumatic brain injury or being paralyze after physical contact. These athletes are sacrificing their bodies and physical health at an opportunity to play a game which they love, and hopefully play it in the professional level. While that’s taking place, college football and basketball are big business that keep expanding. College sports bring in a large amount of revenues. The result is that many of them fail to graduate. Paying college athletes would not ruin amateur sport because even though most college athletes do get scholarship and should focus on their education it doesn’t help them if mo st of the time they are not attending classes to be in practice or games. College sports do make a high-income and athletes deserve a portion of the revenue they bring their programs. Research Aims The aims of the research is stated below- To find out the existing marketing initiatives used by Manjit@The Wharf To measure the effectiveness of the marketing tools used To identify the marketing tools used by the competitors To evaluate the fulfillment of the marketing goals of Manjit Research Design: Quantitative Method The research would be done through the use of the quantitative data collection methods. The collected data would be analyzed as well as interpreted in order to derive suitable conclusions (Gelman et al. 2014). Research Design: Sample The sample size of this research would comprise of total 50 people, out of which there would be 10 supervisors, 5 chefs, 10 buttlers, 4 operation heads and 21 hotel staff. The samples would be collected from the Manjit@The Wharf, located at Sydney. Research Design: Research Tools The main research tools used in this research would be survey questionnaires and focus group discussion. The survey questionnaire would be divided equally among the participants and there would be separate questions for the supervisors, chefs, buttlers, operation heads and hotel staffs. The questionnaires would be circulated in persons and also through email. The focus group discussions would be done in the hotel banquet room, by taking six members at a time, picked randomly from the hotel. Do you think the restaurant is successful in identifying their primary and secondary target segments? What do you think about the success of the previous marketing campaigns? Questionnaire for Chefs and Buttlers Do you find the marketing strategy of the company attractive? Do you feel that the company puts enough focus on the food items while designing publicity stunts? Questionnaire for hotel staffs Do you think that the restaurant has good publicity campaigns? What are your opinions about the advertisements of the company? How involved are you in the brainstorming process? Research Analysis The research analysis process would concern around the interpretation of the collected data.
